The Mayor with theYouth Council and Several of our wonderful volunteers from our Town.
The Town of Plantersville created a Youth Council in the spring of 2009. The purpose of this group is for the youth to act as ambassadors for our community, to initiate and complete service projects, develop leadership skills and to HAVE FUN!
The Youth Council is open to 9th-12th Graders lving in the immediate Plantesville area. There are applications available, please see Mayor Gloria Holland or come by Plantersville Town Hall to pick up an applications. Requirements include regular attendance in our meetings, assisting with established projects (aluminum can recycling to benefit our park, collecting newspapers that we take to the animal shelter), fund raising and other projects. Parents are required to sign the application and are expected to take part in some of the activities throughout the year. Current members are: Kristen Montgomery, president, Blake Estes, vice president, Kim Enos, secretary, and Jenny Rigby, parliamentarian.
The Mayor's Youth Council has been in existence for only 5 months and we have accomplished quite a bit! We have been given two grants for beautification and recycling education. It is our goal to increase awareness and participation not only on the Youth Council, but to ask our residents to partner with us as we continue to recycle aluminum cans for our park fund, and to recycle newspapers that we take to the animal shelter. Anyone wishing to volunteer in any way please contact Mayor Holland. Please bring your cans and newspapers to town hall.
Grants Received:
Community Pride Grant-A $400 grant to begin a beautification project, in conjunction with the town's efforts Recycling Education Grant-A $500 start up grant to create awareness and initiate paper and can recycling.
Tupelo-Lee Humane Society
The Plantersville Youth Council and Adult Volunteers visit the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society to donate newspapers. These are used in the cages and with the number of animals in the shelter, are always welcome! Council members present are Kristen Montgomery, Kim Enos and Josh Montgomery. Not shown are Blake Estes and Jenny Rigby
Other needs at the shelter are toilet paper/paper towel tubes, plastic soda bottles and socks. The shelter workers put food in these items and they become toys for the pets. Another good way to recycle and make a difference! Visit the shelter, it makes their needs more real!
